Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund
Jim Larkin and M. Lacey are the are co-founders and owners of Phoenix New Times. He established Village Voice Media in 1970. The company was an alternative to the weekly newspapers that were distributed in Phoenix, Arizona. The two journalists were recently arrested because of writing and advertising a story about Joe Arpaio, the Sherriff of Maricopa County.
The county attorney dropped their charges due to lack of a probable cause. Larkin and Lacey later sued Sherriff Arpaio for violating their First Amendment Rights. The 9th United States Circuit of Appeals found no probable course in the apprehension. Maricopa County Settled the Case and compensated them with $3.75 million.
Larkin and Lacey used the money to establish the Frontera Fund. It was used to assist groups that advocate for civil, human and migrants` right in Arizona. The major rights that the fund supports include civic participation and immigrants’ rights.
